The working group “Pragmatism” has been formed in preparation for the spring 2017 CCA-sponsored conference “The Culture of Experience: Pragmatism and Twentieth-Century U.S. Literature.” Our discussions will be organized around the elaboration of such topics as empiricism and rationalism, spiritualism and materialism, monism and pluralism. The working group will start by taking up a course of reading suggested by William James in A Pluralistic Universe (1909), in which he sketches the history of his own thought on a trajectory leading from Kant and Hegel to Royce, Bradley, Fechner, and Bergson. In the spring, we will turn to an intensive reading of the reception of pragmatism in twentieth-century America and abroad.
